John Workman was the art director for Heavy Metal from the beginning. He later went on to work as a letterer for DC and Marvel in the mid-80s, another example of how much industry crossover there was between Heavy Metal and the Big Two back in the day.
This strip runs on the premise outlined in the third panel – someone from the far future comes back to America in the late 50s and early 60s to buy comics fresh off the rack to take back to the future so they can be sold to collectors. It’s a great scheme but it begs the question of why those newsstand owners never asked about his outlandish headgear.
