By the early 80s, it was far enough from the war that it was possible to steal the Wehrmacht helmet design without too much hue and outcry – besides, it does a lot to add to the fascist tone of the story’s setting.
Another setting detail that I really enjoy is the abundant facepainting among the professional class. In a world of perpetual winter, people will figure out a way to make themselves stand out. I buy it.
