One of the things that Heavy Metal did very, very well was positioning itself as a major advertising platform that could reach a very specific audience – American stoners who liked visually interesting things (movies, among other things). This issue contains ads for four movies. One of them – Blade Runner – also had a separate feature article that contained promotional stills and concept art from Syd Mead.
Two of the other movies also went on to be fairly successful – I’ll let you work out which one didn’t. I’m hesitant to ascribe the success of these films to these ads in Heavy Metal, but the exposure probably didn’t hurt.
