The really interesting thing about this episode is that it mirrors the introductory pages of the series – a man living in the pits of despair is found by someone who offers him salvation. Even the phrasing – “I am come” is the same.

What makes this notable is that the reader has spent the past few pages watching this man’s life unravel – he locked his freaks in their carriage, burned them alive, then disappeared into the bottom of a bottle of alcohol. The man seeking salvation here is the same man who was offering it in the introdcution.

Of course, you’re probably just marvelling at the crosshatching in the man’s coat. And who could blame you?
