I believe that this ad ran in other National Lampoon publications at about the same time as it ran in Heavy Metal. The conceit is that the reader gets to choose which of the two naked women he wants to be buy a subscription from. I guess that the choice of women is meant to distract the reader from the fact that he’s buying a subscription to National Lampoon and not Playboy.

At any rate, the soft focus of the pictures really clashes with the kind of material that Heavy Metal was putting out during this time period. It’s almost like a throwback to the 70s.
