There’s a lot going on in this issue’s Dossier. The first page features a short review of Fantagraphics over Matt Howarth’s comic strip review of Jay Kennedy’s Newave and Underground Price Guide – “it’s a thick book and the type is really small.” On later pages, there are also reviews of Love and Rockets and a few other Fantagraphics publications.

The next page features Howard Cruse promoting his book-length Doonesbury critique, also in strip form. I’m terribly amused by the layout choices displayed directly above the strip – why is the third column especially large? It is a mystery.

The last page features Joey Ramone’s reviews of three contemporary video games, also in strip format. It’s not an especially entertaining strip, but it’s notable that this is not Joey’s first contribution to this publication.

I honestly had no idea that Heavy Metal featured this kind of material in the review section. It’s amazing to read now and I can only imagine how weird it was to be exposed to this kind of information at the time.
