In this chapter, Crepax amplifies the ongoing story of a black musician going after the mob for killing his white girlfriend (not because she was race-mixing, mind you, but because she was a witness) by throwing in a bunch of statistics about KKK-driven lynchings in the South. It is only obvious that the top and bottom panels are flashback/thematic visualizations, when you notice that they are differentiated by the rounded corners on the panels.
