On the next page, the rock star depicted in the last panel explains the whole plot of this short story. She made two robots shaped like her parents and used them to hire a private detective (the protagonist of this story) to find her. They gave the detective the old picture that shows up in the penultimate panel so that he could compare and contrast where she started and where she ended up. She said she did this because her real parents were dead and she wanted the comfort of knowing that someone out there was looking for her.
