The Hollow Planet is a really good example of world-building that conveys the details of the world through the story instead of through narrative chunks. This page is a good example: one of the key points of the society is that there are no men. We see in a few places that this has led to what is essentially a lesbian utopia. But they still need to reproduce. So they have a captured, mutated male in a large tank and they have transformed the insemination process into a whole ritual that women are selected to participate in. Which is what we see here – the lead character has climbed out onto the insemination seat so she can take the chance at impregnation. Schuiten is a good enough artist that he included a line of liquid from the containment tank to the end of the perch.
