One of the subplots in this story is a group of men who have made a living plundering unsuspecting planets. They find out about the lesbian utopia and decide to invade it. Y’know, for funsies. Also, to give themselves a greater degree of difficulty, they decide to leave their modern weapons at home and go with armor and swords.

Unfortunately, the women were craftier than the men and they trapped them. And here we get to see what they were going to do with the men that their expedition was meant to gather up. The men are trussed up and used as breeding stock – in public, no less (witness the auditorium seating in the first panel).

From here, we are given an explanation that the women in this lesbian utopia had learned from a type of insect that killed the males after breeding. And it taught them good lessons about how to build homes on cliffsides, among other things. But the story really lingers on the sexual aspects – which culminates in the scene where we see that they have grilled the man they were just using as a sexual plaything.

The other men – the ones that had come here to rape and pillage – will be saved for later. I think there’s meant to be material for some kind of problematic moral grey area discussion in all of this, but Schuiten’s scenery ends up being more interesting to pay attention to than the subtext.
