One of the themes of this story is the idea of hidden and lost treasures from the old, destroyed world. This old man lives in a library full of things he’s collected, including the Mona Lisa. I find the juxtaposition of the Mona Lisa and Violhaine (the main character) in the fifth and sixth tiers to be one of the more elegant sequences in this story.
