One of the weird things that happens in the story is that the famous opera singer Foligatto gets invited to the carnival in his home town. While he is performing on stage, his voice vanishes. Over the course of the next few pages, his voice starts appearing in the mouth of random townspeople as they are going about their business. It’s a neat narrative trick, giving snapshots of the town while furthering the plot.
