I’m not going to lie – I think that Serpieri’s work is best when it’s just pinups as opposed to actual narrative. He’s a pretty solid narrative storyteller, it’s just that his narratives tend to veer directly into rape more often than not. When he focuses on just the pinup, all of the problematic aspects of the narrative simply aren’t there, allowing the viewer to appreciate the aesthetics of the image.

And the aesthetics are very compelling. Purely from a technical viewpoint, Serpieri is a masterful artist. The fact that he chooses to depict attractive women in sexual situations is almost inconsequential – either it’s your thing or it isn’t. But if it’s your thing, he really knows how to get your attention as a viewer.
