This is interesting. Kevin Eastman, who has owned Heavy Metal for about a year by this point, has decided to write a story for publication in his magazine. And so he went out and got Simon Bisley to draw it for him. It’s not a great story, but it’s pretty visually dynamic. Seems pretty straightforward.

So when Grant Morrison went out and got Ben Marra to draw a comic that Morrison wrote for the first issue that he edited, my first thought was “that’s not really a new idea.” But the thing about being an editor and a publisher is that you get to do what you want with your magazine. I just wonder if Ben Marra knew that the design for the creatures in his story bear more than a slight resemblance to the creatures that Bisley designed for Eastman’s first story in Heavy Metal 23 years earlier. Because they really do.
