It’s kind of hard to tell from the scan, but there is a distinction between the words in the top caption in each panel and the bottom caption. In the bottom caption, the words are in quotes, implying that someone is saying the narration out loud, whereas the ones in the top caption are not in quotes. It’s not really clear who’s talking in the bottom captions throughout; it’s sort of explained that one of the characters in the shootout acted out something like this when he was a kid, but it took me three reads of the story to figure that out. It is not an effective narrative device, all things considered.
