This is one of the more fucked-up sequences in this story and in the publication as a whole (and I’ve read a lot of issues of Heavy Metal). In the previous pages, the main character is revealed to be a buff, attractive male who the woman running the installation immediately finds sexy and appealing (because of course she does), to the point where she shows him around and allows him to seduce her. Cue a page-long sexual encounter, which gets us to this page.
Unknown to the hero, a micro-missile has been planted in his testicles and set to go off during orgasm. The remote team in the first panel times the launch of the missile to correspond with his orgasm, with the intended effect of destroying the woman when she is at her most vulnerable. And the hero doesn’t actually get his memory back until after his payload has been delivered.
I want to direct your attention to the third panel – that giant word balloon that looks like it was pasted on top of the art? Yeah, it was probably pasted on top of the art by the Heavy Metal production team as a means of covering up the explosion in the woman – mostly because the Heavy Metal team is still super-sensitive to publishing anything that depicts violence towards women, especially in a sexual context. That they didn’t do anything to cover up the burning woman in the subsequent panels tells you a lot about how narrow and specific this concern actually is.
