This whole story has heavy-handed elements of the Christ story – including, but not limited to, the scene where the John the Baptist character identifies the Christ figure, who is later crucified as a sacrifice to bring the water back.

Here, though, we see that symbolism tied up in a neat bow that includes the aforementioned John the Baptist sacrificing himself and the Christ character having sex with the woman who has thrown herself at him on more than one occasion. If it was not as well rendered, the story would be almost laughable. But the realism of the artwork does a great job of grounding it.
