I’m calling it now:Heavy Metal hit it’s nadir of capitalist self-exploitation in the summer of 1999. If you wanted a pure, unadulterated hit of how over-the-top Heavy Metal could get in the late 90s, this is the special for you.

By this point, Eastman had been trying to make this movie as a star vehicle for his B-movie wife, Julie Strain, since 1996. It was more than just a film, though, it was a merchandising opportunity.

The movie special features a fifteen page merchandise catalog that includes resin statues, action figures, authorized novelizations, calendars, a soundtrack, and a cold cast porcelain sculpture. In addition to the ads I’m going to show you over the next few days.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that THE MOVIE HASN’T COME OUT YET. The entire issue starts with a lengthy complaint about delays. But hey, check out the merchandise that has been lined up so far.
