Okay, so I have Views on the use of the word “Eurocomics.” We don’t call manga “Japanocomics” or “Asiocomics” so why are we calling comics from “Eurocomics” just based on their origin? Thirty seconds with Google can tell you that the biggest market in Europe is the French language market and that market calls comics Bandes Dessinées (or BD for short). The word Eurocomics is what happens when someone doesn’t know the real word and invents a new term. 

The reason this really bothers me in this context is that Heavy Metal is based on a French anthology and the creators of that original work would have absolutely referred to their art as BD. It should be baked into the DNA of the magazine. And there was at least one article about BD in the early 80s, so at least the Americans made an attempt.

So this just strikes me as a pure lack of institutional knowledge. Tragic.

And then IDW created an imprint called Eurocomics. Doubly tragic.
