Slim Kentucky is interesting in all kinds of ways. The fact that it’s a western highlights the French fascination with that particular genre. The name Slim Kentucky feels like a poor translation of Kentucky Slim that somehow bounced off the inverted French syntax that puts the adjective after the noun (eg. le chat noir). The linework is more ligne clair than Charleroi, but is very obviously influenced by the more contemporary sensibility that the Metal Hurlant founders brought to the market, while still maintaining the old-school Francophone adventure story style; this is something that would not have been out of place in Pilote during the late 60s, before Heavy Metal was a gleam in anyone’s eye.
