There are actually two things going on here. The text pieces are from Jay Kinney’s ongoing Underground Comix column and are going into some detail about the context of Underground Comix and what else was being published at the time – and why the Undergrounds thought that making newspapers and their own comic books were the only possible solution. From a historical point of view, this column has been a gold mine. (Interestingly, one of the letters in this month’s letter column characterizes this history as complete garbage. Not everyone was a fan.)

The visuals are from a Bissette and Perry short piece that presumably had a lot of whitespace associated with it. Breaking up the walls of text with cut-up strips has been a staple since Ted White took over as editor. In my opinion, this is the best use of that combination to date. It does a great job of breaking up the text and preserving the intent of the strip.
