One of the more successful promotional weapons in the Heavy Metal arsenal was the Gallery section. It often featured some in-depth discussion of whatever needed to be promoted that month. Occasionally, it was actually used to dig into one of the magazine’s features.

This particular gallery presentation was a discussion of the history of Starstruck, which started as a stage play with an appalling production schedule (they were still building the set minutes before the curtain opened for the first show) and moved into the much more forgiving world of comics.

I also find the story of the meeting between Michael Kaluta and Elaine Lee (the creative team) as presented on this page to be very interesting and more than a little troubling. When he approached her, she was “pouring [sic] over a stack of sf fanzines in  a New York restaurant.” I may be reading that wrong, but it sounds like he was hitting on her and they ended up as a creative team.
