Time for some more family history, as reflected in the mailing labels of my father’s Heavy Metal subscription.

We moved from Vienna, Virginia to Kensington, Maryland at the end of January 1983 – the same day that the Washington Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins in Superbowl XVII.

However, the mailing labels on the magazines did not change until October of 1983. From January until September, the subscription still went to my uncle’s house in Fairfax. In October, the address changed to suburban Maryland (members of my family still live at that address, so it’s deliberately obscured).

Being able to trace the movement of my family through the addresses on subscription labels is a little bit like archaeology. It’s also one of my favorite parts of this rereading experience.
