In previous installments, the symbolism of this strip has been fairly low-key. Here, it gets amped up in a scene set in a Turkish bath in Budapest that is suddenly filled with blood – not real blood, mind you, symbolic blood. The discussion is all about the abortive Hungarian uprising in the 50s that was brutally suppressed, which is where the blood ostensibly comes from. On top of that, it’s just a beautiful use of color and a very shocking change from the color palette of the story to this point.
