There is a lot of behind-the-scenes information that is peeking out from between the lines, but you sort of have to extrapolate to figure out what happened. My personal theory is that Howard Jurofsky did something convoluted and bad with the finances of the company, which is what led to all of the shifting and closing and consolidation. The film with Robert Rodriguez still hasn’t come out.
