Yes, the African tribesmen are presented in a stereotypically racist style that seems to be directly out of the 1950s. But that’s because the strip is set in the 1950s. If you look at the character in the bottom right corner, though, you can see that Chaland is actually capable of rendering an African tribesman in a more non-stereotyped style that gives him some actual personality and nuance.

I also like the upside-down panels here – presented that way because the POV character is being carried around upside-down and that’s what he sees.
