One of the very successful aspects of this story is the depiction of the ever-present garbage. It’s everywhere and the color scheme really drives that point home. This is not a very uplifting story.

I also like the appearance of Bibendum, the Michelin Man. Here, he’s treated as a kind of god. If you look carefully, you can see a man in front of him, cooking something. On the next page, we are told that a local woman gave birth to a stillborn child and she is cooking it as a sacrifice to the man.
