In my opinion, one of the worst mistakes that Heavy Metal ever made was switching to numbers on the covers of their magazines. When they did that in 2012, they counted wrong – issue 259 should have been issue 311. So when I see the new editorial staff of Heavy Metal crowing about how awesome it is that they’ve hit issue 300, all I can think is that I’m reading about an alternate reality and that these guys believe their own hype. This also marks the final deviation from celebrating anniversaries – David Erwin in the bottom left corner doesn’t even know how many years the book has been published by this point (the answer is 44, Dave).

This issue is also remarkable for being the issue that got a lot of attention because Hannah Means-Shannon rage quit the book after being treated like shit by her bosses. There were articles about it and everything. Those same articles point out that Kevin Eastman found out he wasn’t the publisher anymore – which he had been since 1992 – by reading the masthead of issue 297. So there’s a lot of alternate reality work going on in this issue is what I’m saying.
