One of the things that has been established by this point is that the author is a fan of hallucinogenic drugs (marijuana, LSD, opium) so when he is dosed with a random hallucinogen on the street, he has the background necessary to not have a complete psychotic breakdown, which was the intended consequence.

Gimenez does a great job of providing a visual representation of what the character experiences. I would argue that one of the best things that comics can accomplish is the visual representation of hallucinations and dreams. If I ever expanded that argument, I would use this page as one of the examples.
