The story so far: a probe has been sent to the planet containing a Mayan-analog character who seemed to have escaped specifically so he can be dumped into the prison pit. Which brings us to this scene, where the main character meets his contact and discovers that he’s not at all what he thought he was. Apparently, he’s a robot, based on the fact that he’s able to regurgitate the components for an entire weapon.

Uncomfortable First Nations stereotypes aside, this is one of the first sequences in the story that gives the reader the idea that things are very, very weird. The rest of the story gets weirder from there.
