As soon as the main character is wounded in an attack by unknown forces, we know that there’s going to be a scene with his girlfriend having sex with him in his hospital bed. Chekhov’s Fuck, if you will. 

There has been a parallel storyline of the main character interacting with his fever dreams and the thin panel on the right ties into the main narrative quite nicely.
