First up, I don’t know why Heavy Metal doesn’t have someone on staff who is capable of picking up a magazine and noting that they keep printing this guy’s self-formatted articles and they always end up with a portion of the text in the crease of the binding. This should be really basic stuff and yet, somehow not.

Second, I want to direct your attention to the third paragraph down in the middle column, where it says that the first issue of Heavy Metal was dated April 1997. That’s a pretty big typo and I’m astonished that not a single one of the seven editors listed in the masthead caught it. (The real year was 1977.)

Third, this article tries to spin the whole shutdown of Epic Illustrated as Heavy Metal triumphing, which isn’t exactly true. In 1986, all of the major anthologies (1996, Eclipse, Raw, Epic Illustrated) all went under. That was the same year that Heavy Metal did a dramatic shift from monthly publication to quarterly publication. The data suggests that there was something going on in 1986 that was actively hostile to anthology magazines and Epic Illustrated was just one victim of many. But sure. Heavy Metal “won.”
