The story opens with a masked orgy in the Papal palace. What’s very interesting about this scene is what was censored and what was not. In the first panel, the prone man’s erection has been erased. This has the effect of making the ass of the woman straddling him comically awkward. In the original, she was starting to penetrate herself. Contrast this with the background of the fourth panel, where the erection of the man closest to the left panel has not been censored.

Also, I find it intriguing how Manara uses people sticking out their tongues as cartooning shorthand for sexual attraction – it’s a persistent theme in this book.
